If you don’t remember one of the craziest trials of the mid-nineties, let me jog your memory. The lawyer says to the jury…If the glove doesn’t fit, you must acquit. Ring a bell now? Lawyer Johnnie Cochran stood there and explained to the OJ Simpson jury that the glove that the prosecution brought into evidence was too small to fit OJ’s hands, and for that reason they must acquit OJ. His tactic worked and as you know, OJ was acquitted for murder.
What if you received an order of 12,000 pair of gloves at your warehouse and went to check them in and realized that they were too small? Every pair of gloves was one size too small. The manufacturer mis-labelled the individual gloves as well as the poly bags and boxes with one size too small.
What do you do at this point? You can’t send them off you the stores as they aren’t marked properly. This is when you hit your Darn It button, scream, curse, and then call the Darn It Apparel Inspection and Repair teams to help.
In this case, both gloves in the pair have a size label in them. The hangtag that connects the two pieces also has a size printed on them. In addition to those, there are sizes on the poly bags and the cartons. We received a carton of samples the next day and performed a few different time studies to get our customer the best price. The labels had to be cut out and re-sewn into each glove. We then had to apply new stickers on the hangtag, polybag and carton.
Winter was upon us and the Darn It team had to turn this project in 6 days. Given that many of our team members are cross trained on sewing and packaging tasks, we were able to complete the task, manifest the shipment and ship it back in time for the retailer to ship them out to their stores for sale.
In the future, If the glove doesn’t fit…Call Darn It!
