Under normal circumstances, a shipment arrives at a retailer’s distribution center. The cartons are unloaded, scanned into inventory, and moved into processing.
Everything seems to be moving as planned.
Until the first unit is scanned.
The barcode doesn’t register correctly.
At first, it may seem like a small issue. Maybe it’s just one garment. But as more units are scanned, it becomes clear—this isn’t an isolated problem. The entire shipment has been labeled with the wrong barcode.
Now what should have been a routine receiving process comes to a halt.
In today’s retail environment, barcodes are critical. They control how inventory is received, tracked, allocated, and ultimately sold. If a barcode is incorrect—whether it’s tied to the wrong SKU, wrong price, or wrong product entirely—the item can’t move through the system.
It can’t be picked. It can’t be shipped. And it certainly can’t be sold at the register.
One apparel retailer recently received a large shipment of men’s knit shirts intended for a seasonal floor set. The product itself was well-made and ready to go. But during receiving, their team discovered that the barcodes on the tickets were tied to the wrong SKU in their system.
Instead of scanning as men’s shirts, the items were coming up as a completely different product.
With thousands of units affected, the retailer couldn’t process the shipment into inventory. The product was placed on hold, and valuable time began slipping away as the planned launch date approached.
So they called Darn It!
The shipment was quickly routed to our facility, where our Apparel Repair team performed a full reticketing and barcode correction process. Each unit was retagged with the correct barcode and verified to ensure it would scan properly within the retailer’s system.
Once completed, the shipment was returned to the retailer’s distribution center, ready to move seamlessly through inventory and out to stores.
Because in retail, something as small as a barcode can stop an entire shipment in its tracks.
But with the right solution—and the right partner—those problems don’t have to slow everything down.
At Darn It, we help keep product moving.
Even when the details aren’t quite right.
