Don’t Open Your Umbrella Indoors

Blog

We all complained this summer when it was too hot outside for days and days, and we will probably start to complain again when the fall weather kicks in because it will be too cold. You can solve the problem of the hot days by turning on the air conditioning and solve the cold day problem by turning on the heat. What happens when you have a major apparel quality problem? Unfortunately, you can’t flip a switch and solve it or make it go away.

In the U.S. many believe that opening an umbrella while inside a building will bring bad luck. This superstition most likely stems from pure pragmatism.  Umbrellas used to be larger and more unwieldy, so opening them inside tends to result in broken things and accidents.  The Egyptians believed that opening an umbrella indoors would anger the sun god, Ra, who would take vengeance on the household. This is because umbrellas were made from peacock feathers and papyrus to protect nobility from the sun and were considered sacred.  There are many other superstitions and beliefs, but I won’t bore you with them.

What do you do if a customer of yours sends you 20,000 umbrellas that need to be opened and inspected for defects?  If the weather was going to be sunny and we could test them outside, but unfortunately, we had to receive the skids inside the building.

Our customer found that many of the umbrella spines were defective and breaking when opened.  So, we started the process of taking the umbrellas out of the packaging and opening each and every one INDOORS!  Three Times!!  Throughout the process, we found many other issues.  We found holes in the fabric and seams coming undone.  Both of those defects of course are no good if you are standing outside in a rainstorm!

Luck was on our customer’s side.  It only took five days for inspection and repackaging to get the first quality umbrellas wrapped up back in their individual sleeves and polybags.  Our customer now has full confidence when selling these that their customers won’t get soaked when they open their new umbrella.
