DARN IT! ANNOUNCES BUSINESS MILESTONE: 25 YEARS OF SERVING THE APPAREL INDUSTRY

Apparel refurbisher continues to grow, with state-of-the-art solutions that meet the
industry’s ever-growing repair, rework, warehousing, and fulfillment needs

April 26, 2021 – This month, apparel re-work and quality control company Darn It! celebrates its 25th anniversary of serving U.S.-based and international apparel manufacturers, retailers, ecommerce companies, and importers with its wide array of repair, refurbishment, remediation, warehousing, and fulfillment services.  When product is shipped to the USA from overseas and it cannot be put on the shelves or online for any quality reason, Darn It partners with its customers help solve the problem.

After 25 years in business – and still going strong – Founder & CEO Jeff Glassman reflects on the company’s early days. “When I was 24 years old, I was working at my father’s apparel manufacturing plant,” Glassman said. “The North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) had recently gone into effect, and a clothing retailer was testing the waters by outsourcing the manufacturing of 40,000 pants.” Unfortunately, when the “finished” garments arrived in the U.S., the customer discovered major quality problems with the goods. Many were stained with sewing machine oil, had crooked labels, and had unfinished, open seams! “The retailer needed the pants to be inspected, cleaned and repaired,” Glassman said, “and they needed this done quickly.  Our goal is to help the customer return their goods to “First Quality” so that they can salvage the sale and do it quickly.”

Following his customer’s advice, Glassman seized the opportunity to create a new business focusing on apparel repair and refurbishment. He launched Darn It! in 1996 with 6 employees in space rented from his father’s manufacturing facility. Eventually, the company grew to several dozen employees and Glassman rented additional space. From the start, Darn It! would tackle rework projects of any size; many projects required refurbishing tens of thousands of garments, shoes, or accessories. Projects grew larger, the staff size grew to 80 and Darn It! was “busting at the seams” in 3 rented buildings.

“By 2008, our major retail customers began asking us to warehouse and distribute apparel and accessories in order to save time and money to ship and handle these goods,” Glassman remembers. “At that point, I decided to purchase our own space: an office building with a 300,000-square-foot warehouse.”

Through the years, the company’s steadfast goal has been to return apparel and merchandise to first-quality goods for major retailers, ecommerce companies, importers, off-price retailers, and jobbers. In fact, the company’s long-time motto is “Your problem is our business.”

To solve customers’ wide variety of problems – and meet their continuing needs such as supporting ever-growing online sales – Darn It! continued to expand its services. Today, the company offers these main services:

  • Apparel repair and refurbishment services – Some of the many value-added services include inspection, dry cleaning, laundering, pressing, sewing repairs, part/trim replacement, relabeling and repackaging. Darn It! also offers 2 large ozone shock-treatment chambers, which are used to eliminate musty odors and for mold remediation.
  • Warehouse, fulfillment, and distribution services – The robust array of services include packaging, kitting, and assembly; audit (AQL), inspection and sorting; apparel returns processing/reverse logistics; and WMS inventory logistics. Darn It’s state-of-the-art software programs instantaneously synchronize all returns processing, reverse logistics, apparel distribution and fulfillment activities with customers’ sales and inventory software.

While trends come and go, Darn It! has solved problems for the apparel industry for 25 years – and is poised to do so for many years to come.
